Our Review

In the UK WeightWatchers have been going for over 35 years, over 40 in the USA. Their philosophy is to encourage a lifelong, healthy approach to weight loss and healthy living.

It all started in the 1960's, when Jean Nidetch, an American woman from Queens, New York, decided that the best way to loose weight was to eat real food and to get help and encouragement from her friends and family. She invited a few friends to her house and they decided to all try to follow a diet recommended by her dietician. Agreeing to meet regularly to chat and encourage each other the idea soon spread to other houses. Eventually she joined a business man and together they started WeightWatchers.

How WeightWatchers works

When you join WeightWatchers you sign up to attend weekly meetings. The leader who runs the meetings is always a former member who has successfully lost weight using the program.

At meetings you learn small encouraging ways that will help you loose weight. You will be weighed confidentially and have your progress monitored. You will be given achievable goals and incentives to follow.

There are two flexible diet plans and the basis of these diets is a point system. All foods are given points to make it simple for you to choose what you can and cannot eat. This allows a flexible approach to weight loss, letting you have treats from time to time. The amount of points you are allowed per day depends on how over weight you are. The more over weight the more points you are allowed to start off with. As you loose weight your points are decreased and there is a lot of emphasis on drinking lots of water. You can also 'earn' yourself extra points by exercising. For example a brisk 15 min walk can earn you an extra 1.5 points.
